This year, 2020, has been one absolutely unbelievable change after another and well, believe it or not, some of the changes have actually been for the better. One of the best changes at our house has been LUNCH!

During this past school year, I can’t even tell you how many times I would send my daughter to school with what I thought was a great lunch. Guess what? It wouldn’t get eaten BECAUSE she is such a chatterbox and would talk her entire lunch time and then go play on the playground, leaving half the lunch still in the lunchbox. What I packed her just never interested her enough to stop talking and eat it. She also always complained it was just too much food. SO sad!

Since COVID-19 has kept us all home for awhile now, my daughter’s eating habits have surprisingly improved at least 1000% and part of it is how cognizant I’ve been when putting my daughter’s lunch together now. I’ve tried to make sure she eats a little bit of protein, a snack, some fruit, and a veggie. Her pediatrician also told me to make sure dairy was an integral part of her daily diet too. Since we’ve had all this extra time, I’ve been really making sure she eats a balanced meal. She has even told her friends, while online playing Roblox, how good her lunch was or that she had to get off to go eat it. That totally surprised me because nothing gets her off of Roblox.

Anyway, word got around and a few moms called me to ask what I was doing to get her to eat her entire lunch and to actually be happy about it. After the first few conversations, I came up with a great idea. My daughter and I decided to surprise a bunch of her friends with a special lunch that we put together and we wanted to include a really cool craft! We dropped the special lunch and the craft off at their houses and everyone loved it!
All of her friends ate their entire well-balanced and perfectly portioned lunch and did a fun craft with their families! Since everyone loves rainbows, we gave the lunch a rainbow theme and included directions on how to make some rainbow origami fortune tellers. The kids loved the lunches and the fun craft and all the parents were incredibly excited to try the same “lunch formula” we used too. You can download your own copy of the Craft a Lunch guide here!
