The 55th Annual Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is a non-profit organization that brings music enrichment programs to Southern California. As one of the oldest, largest, and most successful house and garden tours in the country, this annual fundraiser draws in 25,000 to 30,000 guests and the proceeds benefit arts and music programs throughout Southern California. The Boddy House, aka Hospitality House, was also the site of the 2007 Pasadena Showcase House. It's a beautiful Hollywood Regency style, 12,000-square-foot mansion designed by James E. Dolena, reimagined by 26 designers, and on display from now until May 19, 2019.
The PSHA has nearly 300 members, all volunteers, and they originally started this as their annual benefit to raise money for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and it's youth concerts. Today, their goals are to fund music programs that nurture the study and appreciation of music, provide music education, ensure that music is available to a broad range of audiences, and further the work of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. Cumulative donations of more than $23 million have been made in support of these programs, as well as the Hollywood Bowl, the Music Mobile van, Youth Concerts, and an annual instrumental competition.
Interior designers are selected through a special process to be featured and decorate one room in the house. This is, of course, a very special honor and many designers would love to have this gig on their resume.
Tickets range from $35-$50 and include free parking and shuttle service, 29 vendor shops and "pop-up" shops, designer talks, and an art gallery full of California artists. There are refreshments on site: a cocktail lounge and restaurant. It's open every day, except Monday, from 9 AM to 4 PM (grounds close at 6 PM), and Fridays a little bit longer (7 PM). Tickets are available HERE.
The home in La Cañada Flintridge was built for Elias Manchester Boddy, a newspaper publisher. It was completed in 1939 and cost $50,350 to build. Mr. Boddy used the home for many social and business parties and receptions. The home sits on the grounds of Descanso Gardens, a 165-acre, oak-covered ranch that he termed "Ranch of Rest". Anyone interested in California history should read about Mr. Boddy and decide for themselves who he really was and what he represented. Here are some photos of the house, but I highly recommend a visit to the Boddy House to see it for yourself. You'll have a fun day and get some great design inspiration. It is recommended for children 12 and older so please find an alternative plan for the younger kiddos that day.
