LEGO Batman Movie - Review & Interview

Opens Friday Feb 10

By Courtney Lewis February 9, 2017

Batman is hands down the greatest super hero of all time…just ask him and he will tell you how he single-handedly saves Gotham City from certain destruction all the time. The new LEGO BATMAN MOVIE opens this Friday and in the irreverent spirit of fun that made "The LEGO(r) Movie" a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble - LEGO Batman - stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker's hostile takeover Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing and try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

The LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is creative, clever and really fun. The people behind the LEGO movies know how to make a fabulous kids movie great for adults . The jokes are non-stop with tons of pop culture references for those of us who grew up in the 80’s. Batman fans will also get a kick out of how elements and scenes from some classic Batman shows and movies are woven throughout the film. Some of my favorite parts of the movie are when they really play up the LEGO aspect and create crazy mini figure characters, or how they say "pow pow" when they fire a weapon. You almost feel like you are in your living room playing LEGOs with your kids.
LEGO Batman is a little darker then The LEGO Movie but still has some great messages . Batman is reluctantly forced to give up his loner ways and learn to work as part of a team . Listening to others' ideas and letting them help causes Batman so much anxiety, and so many laughs for all of us who, like me, find it really hard to give up control. Batman’s team brings their unique styles and skills to help save Gotham.

RosarioDawson voices Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon the new Commission Gordon of Gotham city. Ms. Dawson is known for her fierce female characters, and like the roles she has brought to life you can tell that she is always one step ahead of everyone else. Her character is strong and smart and is the only one that really rattles Batman. We got to talk to Ms. Dawson who shared with us where Barbara Gordon’s confidence comes from and why it is so important.

“She’s not trying to be Batman, and she's not trying to be her father, Commissioner Gordon. She's trying to be the version of herself and it's beautiful to see what her contribution is. It's definitely flattering and it's really lovely to see this young woman who's so inspired that she wants to emulate these incredible men in her life, but it's also really powerful and dynamic to then see those same men being moved and challenged and pushed by that same woman who takes what they taught her and adds something even more to it. And it's just beautiful to see that evolution. I think that's where that confidence comes from, because she's someone who knows her purpose. She knows what she wants, she knows what she's capable of and what she's willing to do to get what she wants. And that's really, really powerful and a gorgeous lesson.
I hope that other people see that because that's where confidence should really come about, not other people complimenting you or you getting a lot of likes on your post or something, but about the work that you put in for the things that you care about and having that have an actual effect in the world and then seeing what that ripple effect is. That should be where you get your confidence from. And you can see she's confident because she put that work in, and she knows what she's contributing, and that's why she's able to fight for it. Even when there's doubters around her, she's like, ‘no', and she's able to really push to add that because she's already Commissioner Gordon, she's already Batgirl. She's already got that spirit of Batgirl. Thatshould be enough. But,she pushes it even further, and that's really amazing. “

We love when films can deliver powerful messages like girl power, working together, confidence and unity with humor. My kids are really excited to see it this weekend, we already have the gear (Thanks Warner Brothers) and I'm looking forward to seeing it with them.
