We absolutely loved the new animated film STORKS. It is a touching and hilarious story about finding your flock and how experiences, both good and bad, can make you family. I was invited by Warner Bros. to a “Baby Shower” at the Beverly Hills Montage Hotel to celebrate the delivery of the movie, 4 years in the making, and got to chat to “proud parents” Nicholas Stoller (Writer and Director), Doug Sweetland (Director), Brad Lewis (Producer) as well as stars Andy Samberg, Stephen Kramer Glickman, Kelsey Grammer and Katie Crown.
Katie Crown plays Tulip, the only human on STORK island. Tulip has a heart as big as her hair, but spends a lot of time alone on the island, which leads to an awesome imagination and some pretty cool inventions. Here are some fun facts we learned about Tulip and actress Katie Crown:
1- Katie Crown was brought in as a scratch actor (a temporary voice actor)
Katie and Stephen Kramer Glickman, who plays Pigeon Toady, came in to do some voice work in the very early stages of the movie. When it came to casting the movie, according to Producer Brad Lewis, after hearing Katie “we couldn't think of anybody else to pull off that part. I mean, Katie had to be that part. She nailed it. ” This is Katie Crown’s first big movie - she said it was “very exciting getting a call saying that they'd like to keep me on…I couldn't believe it…. (it was) A dream come true.”
2- What does Katie think about Tulip?
“ I think she's a really cool character. It's nice playing someone who's really fun, affable, but also super smart. She's an inventor. She builds this great plane. You know, she's got a lot of good ideas. It's really fun being able to play someone like that.” She related to how Tulip could be a bit nervous and awkward with others, but that she was actually very mighty, strong and smart.
3- Who came up with the name Tulip?
I promised my friend, who has a 5 year old daughter with gorgeous red curls named Tulip, I would ask how they came up with the name. Writer Nicholas Stoller gives all the credit to his daughter, who was 5 at the time. In the process it was “Really early, because I was just like, 'What should she be named?' And she goes, like, ‘Tulip,' and it worked!" His daughter also came up with the baby’s name, which I don’t want to spoil for you, but I think it is safe to say his daughter will have a successful career as a writer, or just goes to a very “LA” preschool.
4- Katie & Andy on childcare
In the film Tulip and Junior (Andy Samberg’s character) are thrown together and tasked with caring for a new baby. Like all parents they quickly find out it’s a lot more challenging than they anticipated, and the actors agree. Andy believes that you should always “be a little nervous with an infant”. Katie had grand plans when she agreed to babysit for a friend - “We're going to take all these pictures and make a crazy calendar and put in all these funny poses and stuff." And then by the time the baby's there, we're just like "what the .....and we couldn't change the diaper. We're on the ground, and we ruined the first diaper, didn't know what we were doing. And then we got another one and we're just both like, "I don't know. I don't know." And so the calendar idea did not happen."
