Santa Monica Macaroni Kid

Back to School

By Courtney Lewis August 21, 2014

Have you made it down to the beach lately and noticed the hundreds of strange blue and clear creatures on the shore? They are called Velella Velella Jellies or more commonly  "By The Wind Sailors" and are very rare, and appear in Santa Monica once or twice every 10 years. They won't be here for much longer so you'll want to get down to the beach soon to see these beautiful and odd creatures. Like a jelly fish they do sting, but you are not likely to even feel it. If you or the kids do pick them up be sure to wash hands before touching your eyes or mouth (which is a pretty good idea for life in general).
